training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination
  c- x' U0 d; h1 k: Lof small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic" v9 W8 |8 U) X0 }, e7 l; f
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
9 }( ]0 }" v/ w4 r- A. g! dpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical7 i' |2 F# u6 p: \
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
- b: g2 D3 x  M. C9 Q. vnext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course5 Z! g, ]3 J2 S# K3 i5 r: c4 E8 z! P
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
2 R8 ?6 P: Z' ^) h, O. \collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
2 x* ^- D! v+ q2 C) Hprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
; n8 M4 U- V$ iindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more+ G! t  h1 D+ W6 a
prevalent.) e6 K  u, m' j& i8 ?

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and7 y# X0 `/ C. C8 L) T4 q
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches5 s/ h3 u* {0 E3 c) n/ ]% p# s
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it1 U+ c- ?% Z" o& s5 ?9 `
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of/ O5 H0 U' n, Y7 V  O2 {
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems3 b* F3 b- p% q7 N) W
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this/ v! V0 T; D7 \# C
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of# t6 E- ~7 d. N% I6 M4 Z1 q
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology.
