This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,$ P" f3 z+ |' k# @+ e* G& p
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the
w' P. N" F, o+ s/ }+ Ichapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
8 ]/ s& k/ Z7 M9 h% M c- Wbook contained a wealth of information, but that it was
; B H, [" u( E5 |* Cunsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the
, D) d3 @/ ^ Y ?/ K9 t9 Z/ ]topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short

self-education.
1 c% y6 M) J' T7 v& DAn introductory text clearly benefits from the# c( C+ C2 Z8 H% F5 q5 Y
coherence provided by a single author, but suffers from
6 k5 l9 J3 f3 D6 Z9 E6 g* G4 ^- R/ mthe finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a
6 Y6 Z1 w, J% ycompromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored3 N' O, _8 ]) \5 d( Z% b5 E; O
by an expert in the specific area under consideration. \+ w* j6 j0 K+ `# E, W0 j
This strategy was facilitated by the successful+ `, W+ z1 e4 f5 S9 O
collaborations that had been developed during the
