and application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum

6 _' j+ H: F0 S }" q9 p A7 yof small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic& g9 v) i( s- }4 E: B
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
: ~; d0 R/ D3 b* N. Npopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical+ ?, o) X: `9 `6 F2 }5 i& ]
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the% Z0 b0 h: K9 h" M# ]9 T9 @
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
' B' C7 s. B1 @% n4 S/ Qofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary. X3 Y# l; o) D7 O% h
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate& i2 b% }- o) T' R. M8 Q* m
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
. I8 w7 B: ^! nindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more
0 i/ s+ G% p, ~8 E' Q3 _# w0 G8 Qprevalent., j* G2 v4 j0 C+ f9 D/ \$ z
' T5 Q; w! }% F9 x/ XSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and _# q n" T0 n
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
9 P! H$ o# T* Z" V$ M v. x7 }% ? kwill produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it) w) g. s8 `& h% T I$ X5 Z
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
! ^ C6 Z# P* @- F, e3 Ybiological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
% Z1 d3 I( n# l3 `$ Qfor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
) l7 F2 e& M5 y1 J: P1 ninformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of2 S) i: u9 h7 D$ ]- j I' X7 J
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
