This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,& E! Q8 [ y1 X
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the3 L% ^! W+ L3 G$ E/ W' b7 E/ |
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large# p; M* U' Z2 M( Q7 T3 ?# C
book contained a wealth of information, but that it was
/ W* e0 Z- T0 ?; Ounsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the" ~7 [0 h1 e; d' Z2 \
topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short+ B$ V! _! n* J4 X9 p
version that could be used as an introductory text or for

' J7 }$ F6 s* C: E. HAn introductory text clearly benefits from the

the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a
* |" e$ D r/ |( V$ _compromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored

This strategy was facilitated by the successful

preparation of Viral Pathogenesis. The text includes
