' I* f% n+ w: a0 v8 R5 \ This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
; j( Y$ }" o% b& `# O# Hpublished in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the: g8 L4 r) z( A' B6 f
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
9 Y0 o& C4 \7 b0 dbook contained a wealth of information, but that it was, a) N( K2 x4 _
unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the$ d( f* O9 m! Z, b# M$ T1 y
topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short c A& x; e0 I0 s& t
version that could be used as an introductory text or for8 {/ b: p( B ^& h
self-education.6 X1 _) J& @- A s; `: e
An introductory text clearly benefits from the1 z+ P Y1 H5 O
coherence provided by a single author, but suffers from
- B5 A5 T; r/ J! E3 K* Wthe finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a
2 N0 m; d5 V. k1 w* Tcompromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored Z* J0 o: g+ s% l* Z
by an expert in the specific area under consideration.+ S- b j T# G+ S
This strategy was facilitated by the successful
0 \9 T' [9 }% T8 q$ Rcollaborations that had been developed during the& A8 [, v6 f$ w1 C" O/ f
preparation of Viral Pathogenesis. The text includes
