This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,& d+ B3 A8 d1 x1 D# x
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the Z4 K' U; R6 p8 V9 n6 l& N
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
2 h0 G0 `3 f# g Y1 I# r9 Z1 zbook contained a wealth of information, but that it was
& n \7 D0 X Q A K# Nunsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the3 U0 D( |0 A' {5 Z( x1 [9 T
topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short3 Y' }# ?* E3 N! i. S# r
version that could be used as an introductory text or for

An introductory text clearly benefits from the8 {* L0 v0 J t* p
coherence provided by a single author, but suffers from
6 y4 W$ l; \# n5 r2 D2 t6 Y' mthe finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a3 R" C# ], v9 I3 }- ~2 |4 P0 P$ D
compromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored- e6 i- ]8 O0 |' S
by an expert in the specific area under consideration.3 ~, T1 s7 F! ^7 l
This strategy was facilitated by the successful
