This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
( I& K4 q: ^2 @ ]published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the* p1 {0 i! z s* x
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
2 N0 E2 X. @+ X& L, ~: Pbook contained a wealth of information, but that it was [6 a+ r3 m1 H& z( |
unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the: i9 z4 n4 w% H6 {0 q1 r
topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short, d$ T* b8 p3 l4 e$ }" ] g
version that could be used as an introductory text or for5 c" v+ E6 T0 @7 V& x
self-education.$ S. b" E. b; R: S, h# @
An introductory text clearly benefits from the
5 H$ S) W1 j3 v: G* h# }coherence provided by a single author, but suffers from# p3 S# i1 \. Y+ [- h& i; q, r# G
the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a. O1 ?* Q% p$ V
compromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored
) y$ [& ]8 g5 W" v Zby an expert in the specific area under consideration.
* C% H" ~2 i" P0 sThis strategy was facilitated by the successful+ b+ V2 V6 F0 }: z$ Z
collaborations that had been developed during the' ^6 v" k( g. _' v; r' K
preparation of Viral Pathogenesis. The text includes/ a& r+ ]' Q) R' i; f @8 Y' `( d; {
references published through to June, 2006.
