5 [% a. a& l5 V0 a4 i This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
4 m$ n* U$ v0 G& o4 u2 m! P5 Opublished in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the& c9 z4 e f: y1 D/ L
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large- U3 e5 O+ U- H8 x* C4 X3 ^
book contained a wealth of information, but that it was
& D* y- C2 P* }6 @' C/ F4 O. ounsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the

self-education.
) p" J# l: C' @" W# wAn introductory text clearly benefits from the

the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a" }6 c6 z/ y- |/ |3 c
compromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored2 K4 p4 a2 o4 {: V. J$ ^9 a+ u
by an expert in the specific area under consideration., h) J; k& w: F) \, R2 |
This strategy was facilitated by the successful
