   This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
- b, ?5 c; z. e5 zbook contained a wealth of information, but that it was
unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the
; F  |3 }4 R$ f. |topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short
version that could be used as an introductory text or for
self-education.
An introductory text clearly benefits from the
; Y7 q* p* g# Ocoherence provided by a single author, but suffers from
6 W$ ^* L' h* w! L0 h/ V" qthe finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a
8 c  x2 W+ L" {* C/ ecompromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored
by an expert in the specific area under consideration.
This strategy was facilitated by the successful
# b: h  t( n) Qcollaborations that had been developed during the
preparation of Viral Pathogenesis. The text includes
$ a. I$ X. o9 Y5 J) ^# [/ }references published through to June, 2006.
