This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
9 R' h5 s+ K0 ~published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the) h: q$ Z/ z% U8 J, r# c& R- C
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large/ c6 Z6 w% H3 x+ W
book contained a wealth of information, but that it was* D% [4 ?0 B* \! }: Z
unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the/ ^" N6 Y1 B* h$ u) C5 X; \
topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short
+ u+ y6 v/ n4 Jversion that could be used as an introductory text or for4 T1 p! z! d) \" ]! q
self-education.
6 S7 k6 A* `7 f! s; I- U5 c9 mAn introductory text clearly benefits from the0 O8 J; c$ t: g9 K4 n+ f
coherence provided by a single author, but suffers from
0 {( E. `$ Q( ~: @the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a
* E; {4 D/ l: C1 X) ~6 vcompromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored' \# h! d! _1 V; P5 K
by an expert in the specific area under consideration.' Z; {: a( j3 A: Y( M% j$ ~
This strategy was facilitated by the successful

preparation of Viral Pathogenesis. The text includes3 u6 D1 b. g4 X" Q* ^: C
