This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,! H% X, q( A2 f. g& g' v- r
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the& J5 O, U9 g: e! n# @7 s
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
2 E: V! E6 i4 k3 jbook contained a wealth of information, but that it was6 @4 O) d" q; b$ S" ?+ |$ g
unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the
& D) S' o$ h4 c r/ dtopic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short

An introductory text clearly benefits from the+ ~* O& h; `( c1 q* z5 ^
coherence provided by a single author, but suffers from3 o) m+ ?. i5 g" K" L# \
the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a% b1 g( A, H% L7 b9 B
compromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored
# G; D) h3 t8 a0 v! Y5 G2 Xby an expert in the specific area under consideration.
. ~' `0 _6 I9 T/ N. ^ O2 MThis strategy was facilitated by the successful) |' q0 W. e y* t' [+ V
