; f' _" P; i }) G This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
' g) o5 d5 F2 n4 Lpublished in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the' B& I" x$ w- @, X6 t2 H7 D
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large- A) y1 \9 ^7 F+ Q- `: ^
book contained a wealth of information, but that it was7 e. I+ F0 Z& I4 O
unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the |4 Y* P0 b* X( T+ ?2 W3 x
topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short/ X" s! d& v+ e7 H
version that could be used as an introductory text or for

: V; o8 K; g4 }- i: X4 kAn introductory text clearly benefits from the
5 t5 b8 h5 B- D1 p* n2 b! w% T% ucoherence provided by a single author, but suffers from
" I0 n/ S* n, b& qthe finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a# U( Y& J: x% ]0 X
compromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored1 U+ t9 B' X; I; q z0 x) [( G
by an expert in the specific area under consideration.
2 L5 _ E' L H% }4 \' |- S% KThis strategy was facilitated by the successful: R- e6 V8 ]: N }9 ]/ l: d/ Y
collaborations that had been developed during the

references published through to June, 2006.
