training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination+ F9 X5 ]7 R5 D0 n& j
of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic% |- l0 u& }2 y9 r9 ~, P# j
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
' q; o: ?" j b; @0 x9 @3 Cpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
, W! ?: ^' p: h# D6 tepidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
5 E# n0 K, |3 q7 Hnext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course, I( X" E3 d1 L) G6 c
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
. r$ k/ f6 u( E+ c/ \. Scollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate" o, V3 b& K* C5 J
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward; I$ c' r- B0 P
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more- Q* u. w5 A- f% m
prevalent.

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
0 n* s" w" \% \. Jviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
" l! `. O+ A' {will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
: u( y4 I3 h# ?( K' jinto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
( D( h/ L7 A/ d- }biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
, Y$ z1 z' B B4 l9 N5 a% N# L4 ffor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this2 |/ d; t5 c4 r. M/ u
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of4 S; P0 v3 l! D+ E# B4 m
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
