of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic
. W. A* \9 D4 `) w# pscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
. Y( \9 _5 q7 ~7 }2 bpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
% _3 n# [9 C2 {0 E* ]8 h! ~epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
6 e$ W z) W. Y" @1 i Anext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
2 Q5 {( S; |! u7 lofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary% N. J2 p2 Q9 l, W- D. Q! {
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
1 ~5 Q" A2 a1 T7 c2 L6 Qprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
: g( b$ U. _* B/ Yindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
) m3 l* H' X @( R+ Lviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches% @6 R, d1 K i7 R- }4 Y8 a
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it. R3 ~* o( b5 E1 `$ t8 y* L
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
3 b- n0 e7 F2 Hbiological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
8 g( T) D( Y v% z+ r# mfor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this% j O: ?% M9 z
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
0 N$ C' H1 ^( J. Y) |& r: jvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
