training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination1 L2 v; b2 x6 l$ V
of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic" r. m) Y; E" E% f- B$ J3 \6 [8 i
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
$ V- I) j+ v5 U% P# [" h* d2 r mpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical, I, s$ f# f3 }2 o0 F
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
: m, C$ K( f) P7 d5 b& P) [next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
" d$ w4 E; [8 i1 [. p6 w! i* Bofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
: k9 p, E" T: X, Q. E3 J" r' Dcollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate& ^" q4 S) o) q& Z
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward0 t5 V: ?8 A' h6 ]; ~+ k# N
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
" n# h8 h, e3 eviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
( Y4 b% C3 C. o1 \3 G+ Cwill produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it: I/ v' z! w# s6 [7 L
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of* P; f7 D9 ?, j. h
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
- S. A# D* [6 t+ b; m# D7 ~7 Ufor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this6 q' j* s+ Z! Z, Q. U/ z
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
* j# a1 q; ~8 L0 P& n% W! ^6 jvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
