5 } u" J: a; S4 h, `! lscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and9 h4 [; s' V; p) ?$ `- _$ h' L
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
) s5 a" K( Y# N6 G! }epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
1 ]2 u1 a0 W" ?* h9 jnext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course9 P. x ^" }/ |% }
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
( l/ k; w" ?+ D7 ] icollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate& r) v* Y) F7 _- u# Z
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
, z& }( l9 _( l9 |* D; K* G$ q# ?0 Nindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more# \1 \' N6 k( ~8 Z& x& m
prevalent.; O1 j* b7 F' N+ I1 W) @4 ]9 N8 M

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and# h+ o* j9 I# \: H; z, J
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
* F/ T, c- G0 i' c9 R, ^# \# Q8 ?will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it+ S! H, i& y" W8 R t
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of8 x! }5 u6 B( [/ @ U# @0 O3 [
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems1 b" a( h' U+ ^6 E
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
# _4 h" w0 x9 X9 Sinformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
! L) Z' {+ M b4 v" v7 Qvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
