and application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum

of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic
( M, Z: W7 H! J U% Gscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
+ }7 @5 H2 p- V0 Spopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical9 S# o/ E6 D; U% G$ T W
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
1 A* l* {; j, A; ~6 Vnext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
: l7 p1 O4 U8 @, D5 {, Yofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary# K( |3 s, V z7 b4 M
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
' H- U. `, p% vprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
* D3 l3 ]2 Y6 L& windividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and, z. i) N: u$ T4 d: g
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches- K5 I0 t6 I# @! k* R- w) ^. \
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it7 O" }, B& @* ^2 y( F d9 H
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
, D" ]* P1 l+ U8 K( z, I1 ebiological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems. ?) a. {$ h/ r0 L
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
0 ?9 v0 R E% z0 A! rinformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
