TRAINING VIROLOGISTS FOR THE FUTURE

How can virologists take advantage of all of these new opportunities for scholarship
and application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum
1 J$ b9 g( P' F9 W8 j8 g, Straining for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination
of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic
( M, Z: W7 H! J  U% Gscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
+ }7 @5 H2 p- V0 Spopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
1 A* l* {; j, A; ~6 Vnext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
: l7 p1 O4 U8 @, D5 {, Yofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
' H- U. `, p% vprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
* D3 l3 ]2 Y6 L& windividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more
6 A  e+ o7 F: P+ k% _- s3 Oprevalent.

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
, D" ]* P1 l+ U8 K( z, I1 ebiological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
0 ?9 v0 R  E% z0 A! rinformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
. i4 J# Q9 J! M7 z# e% hvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology.
