and application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum

9 {2 c V3 ]7 X6 nof small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic( R; f+ ~2 ~7 N% j6 I- X
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and5 T, X- V* M, q& i- u8 z7 K
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical6 P L$ o+ Z' W
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
9 G3 D$ v' N( ]$ f$ rnext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course1 a4 Z$ c% t# `* L; _. Z, X/ ^9 Y
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
G- j/ N* J# mcollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate, v+ b3 a- p5 w, d. l2 O/ S
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward3 b0 o; _1 o N; h! i
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

& J1 U( y6 ~/ S; {4 eSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
k" |& T/ h4 A( r9 G; pviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches4 C( Y) p% A7 I/ Z9 @" k
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it0 O1 d8 k7 ]) t* h u- T4 D' k0 N
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of6 L' C( Z9 ?$ h4 r" Z
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
6 Z) N6 `* r% Xfor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this- V6 u. v- W1 ]1 V* ]# Q; @
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
9 J+ E) N3 _- ^+ M: vvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
