How can virologists take advantage of all of these new opportunities for scholarship! `( I7 ~8 `7 n- w5 [" U
and application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum5 N! U+ b1 ]; c0 h8 T# X
training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination5 J0 G8 T' g0 }9 o' L- X
of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic
9 c2 k1 ?5 ]% q, z: l$ iscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and% y+ Q+ A1 w% q. W0 W6 y
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical: h E7 A# f* {( @' q% A" L5 a6 t
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
/ }2 S& k# {( F; }8 L- Wnext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
/ r6 v9 K3 r8 c' o! u! E9 @offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary8 Y- f' [) T2 f! E0 M# h
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
$ t& Y9 P# ^/ ^. lprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
# N& ^! X: O7 u# ~( Z4 W* R$ Rindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more
7 b+ w( [3 k7 ?8 oprevalent.! r# Q' G. H) R% m# W
7 ~, T- ?9 \* }# {" fSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and, j( Y P/ P* y/ ]; o! D; ?
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches' E; [8 e8 J4 k1 Y
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it/ T: H9 s4 z. e
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of1 q/ `5 {$ n H
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
4 C: ?6 x" T0 w' Efor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this. w: j. N& z& j& p4 O$ G3 R
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
* h U! A u" V* z' w4 z+ `! xvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
